Post-WebToon. After Kaeya brought the vision back to Diluc.
Kaeya was no stranger to the definition of "Vision Resonance". Since he was a child he had heard of that rare event linked to the figure of some Vision Users. A circumstance that, in one way or another, could have led the lucky owners of that Archon’s gift to find their 'soulmate'.
In fact, from time to time, it could happen that two Visions were particularly compatible with each other. And the reaction resulting from that resonance created not only an elemental trace, not unlike a red thread that united the two Users, but also a synergy between their elements in battle.
The definition of 'soulmate' was obviously very fictional, given that there was historical evidence of platonic relationships but equally powerful at the level of elemental reactions, but in a certain way it was what could be expected from two Vision united by the elusive red thread of destiny.
And until that morning the "Vision Resonance" had never been a problem or a reality for Kaeya.
For years, his Vision had never reacted and Kaeya had easily accepted the idea that his soulmate didn’t exist. On the other hand, it was a very rare event, and the possibility that he was one of the chosen ones for that gift had always seemed absurd as well as impossible.
Yet that morning, his Vision had begun to react, creating a vibrant glare of light around it that reminded him of the regular beating of a heart. Kaeya had watched it for a long time, surprised by that reaction, and only by using the Elemental Sight he was able to see a flickering red trace, similar to a thread.
It started from his left ring finger, and in soft curves it glided towards the outside of his apartment, tracing the path that would guide him to another Vision User who, in one way or another, would become part of his existence.
Kaeya, however, was unable to welcome that discovery with joy and emotion, nor with any other feelings that should have been felt in a similar situation. Instead he felt quite nervous, because he didn't need such a bond.
His life was poised between light and dark. Made of friendly but hollow smiles and speeches on the integrity of the Knights of Favonius, things that instead concealed an underground network of informants extended beyond the borders of Mondstadt. It wasn’t an existence that he would have shared lightly with other people, because not everyone was able to bear such a weight and as many secrets.
Despite this, Kaeya knew with equal certainty that hiding that bond was impossible. On the other side of that thread there was another person able to find and follow the same track that he himself was observing. Their meeting would happen in any case, whether he wanted it or not.
For that reason, and even with a hint of curiosity, Kaeya left his apartment to face his soulmate. The sooner he would discover their identity, the sooner he would decide how to deal with the situation.
In his first steps away from the apartment, Kaeya was greeted by a newly awakened Mondstadt.
The Ludi Harpastrum had only ended the day before, but the city was still decorated for the party, and there was still the air of freedom and fun that had characterized those last few weeks.
With the help of the Elemental Sight, Kaeya took the road towards the dock square and then he went up to the open space outside Angel's Share. The tavern was still closed, in fact the outside tables were empty, but it was in that place that his Vision emitted a sort of tremor and the thread, which up to that moment had vibrated placidly, seemed to become more vivid.
Surprised by that reaction, Kaeya's eyes darted left and right, certain to be close to his 'target', and what his gaze met was only the familiar figure of Diluc, standing on the external stairs of the upper floor of the tavern.
He shouldn't have felt surprised, because Diluc had been back in Mondstadt for a few weeks now, and they had only seen each other the night before, but one detail was different and didn’t escape his gaze.
In fact, hanging from his belt, Diluc wore his Vision after three years of separation. The opaque color that had characterized it during those years had been replaced by a more lively hue, as if the Vision was 'happy' to have found its master and recovered its energy. It wasn’t a rare thing for those objects to behave in that way, since they generally lose their powers if deprived of their User.
Kaeya couldn't help but smile, showing his satisfaction with that discovery without any mask - it meant that the other had looked into the vase he had brought him the night before -, but soon his lips lost that smirk to assume a more surprised fold that was also painted on Diluc's face.
Because the thread that had led him there didn’t flee to other shores, but slid sinuously at the top of the stairs, stopping on the young man's left ring finger in a clear answer to the question: “Who is my soulmate?”
Kaeya couldn’t deny the amazement for that discovery nor a pinch of pleasure, because he didn’t need the Vision Resonance, or to get to the other end of a thread, to know that his life was and would remain forever linked to Diluc. He was the only exception in the list of reasons why Kaeya didn't want intimate connection with other people.
Yet on the other hand that was a problem, because their relationship couldn’t even be defined as a 'real relationship'... and the fact that Diluc, after overcoming the astonishment, had returned inside the tavern slamming the door behind him, said a lot about how he also thought about that situation.
The circumstances weren't the best, but Kaeya felt really relieved. Because the idea of entrusting his life to Diluc was something reassuring and pleasant for him: it tasted like the past that he thought he had lost forever.
Kaeya smiled again, and taking the road to the Knights' Headquarters, he couldn't help but think about the next meeting between him and Diluc, and how things would inevitably change.
